When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the heart of the Voting - TopicsExpress

When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the heart of the Voting Rights Act on Tuesday, it rendered inoperable the part of that law which had previously allowed Texas State Senator Wendy Davis to hang onto her job. In 2011 Davis challenged a Republican-led redistricting effort which would have moved thousands of black and Hispanic voters from her Fort Worth district into neighboring districts and which likely would have cost Davis her state senate seat. Davis, however, successfully challenged the move in federal court under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, a part of the law which the Supreme Court has now gutted, she retained her state senate position, and her thirteen-hour filibuster is now part of Texas legislative history.
