When the War of 1812 broke out Britain had commanded the worlds seas for over 200 years. No country could challenge the Royal Navy, least of all a bunch of breakaway colonies. The USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) had been in service for only 15 years, one of our original frigates that created the US Navy. In that war she fought and defeated 5 British warships, and suddenly the British knew they werent the only country of natural-born sailors and shipbuilders around.
