When the fall wildflowers bloom, the pollinators come out in - TopicsExpress

When the fall wildflowers bloom, the pollinators come out in swarms. The predators are already waiting, and the whole thing becomes the worlds most beautiful killing field. Every year, I search the goldenrod for ambush bugs that I know must be there, but I never find any. Theyre just too well camouflaged for my old eyes. My kid found one yesterday for me. Unfortunately for the ambush bug, by the time we spotted him, hed already become someone elses prey. Theres always a bigger predator. Euthyrhynchus floridanus (the Florida predatory stink bug), eating an ambush bug (Subfamily Phymatinae, maybe Phymata sp.; it was looking the little worse for wear when I found it, so Im not going to try IDing it). St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Wakulla County, Florida. 12 October 2014.
