When the rate of return on capital exceeds the rate of growth of output and income, as it did in the nineteenth century and seems quite likely to do again in the twenty-first, capitalism automatically generates arbitrary and unsustainable inequalities that radically undermine the meritocratic values on which which democratic societies are based, Piketty writes. cbsnews/news/how-a-700-page-economics-book-surged-to-no-1-on-amazon/ Some knowledgeable daaee should explain to that economist that Allah already taught us how to redistribute capital that has been hoarded for a year as savings or capital that might be hoarded out of temptation such as buried treasure, harvests, inventories, etc. Huh? Zakat is a mechanism that combats gross societal inequities, and every Muslim community should look to cure deficiencies in its collection and distribution of zakat whenever it finds rampant wealth inequality in its population. Allah bestowed on us the gift of giving zakat. Many people think of zakat as forced-giving of charity. Thats a view that is both selfish and wrong-headed. It is selfish because Islam tells us that the money we truly own is sadaqah, ie charity, while zakat is truly money that already belongs to the zakat recipients. Keeping your money as opposed to giving in sadaqah might be sinful, but often it is not. And RasoolAllah taught us not to give so much in charity that we impoverish our own families. On the other hand, keeping even one penny of Zakat is a sin of terrible consequences, may Allah save me and you from the Fire! So much so that it is preferable to err on the side of overpaying zakat, and Allah Knows better. You may see more and more news about Pikettys book and similar theories. Thats all fine. But realize deep in your heart and be amazed that Allah gave us a practical and working solution -- not mere theories -- in zakat. And that the failure to submit fully to Allah by giving zakat as it was meant to be given and TO WHOM it was meant to be given -- that these are the causes of much inequality and suffering among Muslims. And Allah Knows better.
