When the shaman goes into the underworld of the unconscious, he (or she) uses the language of his own totems to navigate this realm. In doing so he can intuitively locate the specific shadow aspects of a person’s unique genetic coding and bring them to light. Whether he interprets these aspects as demons or animals or anything else is irrelevant. What matters is that they represent the specific fear patterns of a certain individual. The true psychoanalyst works in the same way. Instead of attempting to find reasons for our psychoses and fears in our childhood, he or she understands that they are really archetypal aspects of one single, universal primal fear. - Richard Rudd
