When then Soviet Union collapsed, all state institutions became dysfunctional. Mafia was on the rise, because some people did not know how to feed themselves in a state of crises. So they resorted to robbing people. What most people do not know is that some of the best mafia in the former USSR were ex-sportsmen. This may seem confusing why would a sportsman turn to robbing people. But after the government stopped funding sports, many professional sportsmen became unemployed. There is also simple psychological explanation to why many sportsmen turned to mafia. So many sportsmen turned into mafia because physical confrontation, competition and fights are very common in sports. Many people are deathly frightened of physical trauma, but thats not the case with professional sportsmen. Because sportsmen have better physical buildup, resilience to pain and lack of fear about confrontation and competition, many of the professional sportsmen became mafias power card. How about that for psychology of sports in a critical situation of collapsed governments? (The guy in the picture is possibly not related to this post, but I wanted to illustrate a common Russian scenario. This is how it looked). englishrussia/images/valuev_accident/1_003.jpg
