When theres a conflict between two parties, must you always choose - TopicsExpress

When theres a conflict between two parties, must you always choose a side? Obviously not. If two random drunks get in a bar fight, do you feel compelled to jump to the defense of one side, or rather tell them to knock it off and remove themselves from an otherwise civil social order? This is an instructive thought when considering the question of intervention in any given foreign conflict. Take Syria, for example. Should we support the oppressive Assad government, or the al-Qaida-affiliated jihadi freedom fighters? Or consider the current conflict in Ukraine - why is it that our government is in such a hurry to spark Cold War II with Russia, other than for international machismo and bragging rights? Its certainly not because the neo-Nazi opposition represents American values. Bottom line - theres not always a right side and a wrong side, in fact when it comes to international conflicts, generally everyone involved is on the wrong side. Libertarians are some of the most anti-war folks youll find, because only governments (particularly large governments) are capable of wreaking havok and human misery on such a vast scale. This is one of the best reasons to advocate shrinking government down as small as possible, and as local as possible - preferably to the individual.
