When they removed president Thabo Mbeki, they claimed it was a victory for the left-wing that had been severely marginalised during his leadership. They claimed he was an advocate of right-wing policies such as GEAR, positing that these anti-poor policies are at the heart of structural inequalities in the country. 7 years later, we are yet to see this victory for the left translating into the radical transformation of our peoples lived experiences. Were also yet to see any policies that are a radical shift from the right-wing ones that were championed by president Mbeki. What we are seeing so far in terms of the economic developmental path weve taken is not fundamentally different to what was presented to us as the cause of our collective crisis. More importantly, we are yet to have an answer to this question: Exactly WHERE is this left-wing tendency that apparently emerged victorious from the battle for the soul of South Afrika? WHERE is it?
