When times are tough, people look for every opportunity to trim - TopicsExpress

When times are tough, people look for every opportunity to trim money. Some items, such as housing and food costs, are tough to trim. But there are many areas where most people spend far more money than they realize. One of those is that vague category called “entertainment.” Whether that involves going to the movies, eating out, shopping, attending concerts or professional sporting events, or simply buying things that provide entertainment, Americans spend a surprisingly large portion of their budget dollars in this category. Somewhere along the way, we’ve become accustomed to the idea that we have to spend money to have a good time. But if we look back at how our grandparents entertained themselves, we can see that isn’t necessarily the case. We can enjoy the company of friends without going out for an expensive meal (and spending the gas to get there). When was the last time you had friends over to play cards or board games? You don’t have to make a big dinner, either -- most people enjoy snacks or homemade desserts. Your kids enjoy going to those expensive theme parks, but know what? Most kids also enjoy a day in the park or an afternoon spent fishing at a nearby pond. Taking a nature hike through a state park is another inexpensive way to spend time. The opportunities to entertain yourself affordably are as unlimited as your imagination. The key is to stop assuming that you and your family must spend money to have a good time.
