When visiting France a couple of years ago, our hosts brought us to the summer apartment where his 80+ grandmother lived. She cooked all day, we had hundreds of oysters, pink champagne, quiche lorraine (the real thing my friends) and an array of other foods. When I tried to thank her, (as her grandson translated to us) she said I was a young woman when the Americans saved us. I will always remember how you saved us, and the chance to cook for Americans is the least I can do. In nearly every encounter in France, that was the typical reaction to meeting an American. And I know that kind old lady was able to cook us that insanely good dinner because of the sacrifices of those brave brave soldiers.
