When was your first Rush experience? I want to share a few - TopicsExpress

When was your first Rush experience? I want to share a few memories with you. I was 13 years old. I had no idea who Rush was and I had literally no interest in music, but the boys changed my life. My family and I were in the station wagon on the way to our cabin in Ontario. We were listening to dads music when Closer to the Heart started playing. I can still remember hearing that song for the first time. It left an impression that will stay with me for the rest of my life. I asked, what song and band is this? My dad replied with, Closer to the Heart son and the band is Rush, theyre the best! I couldnt stop listening to Closer to the Heart and Tom Sawyer. After that car ride I went out and purchased the Rush Replay x3, shortly followed by the first Rush album and 2112. That was the beginning and I havent stopped listening. I didnt know at the time, but Rush is my dads favorite band. Hes told me many stories of seeing them in the 70s and 80s and I think its so cool that he walked to the local music store and purchased Fly by Night on the release day in 75. He took me to my first concert in 2008 during the Snakes & Arrows tour. It was the first time Rush had been to my city in 25 years! With the opening notes of Limelight I broke down and started crying uncontrollably. I turned to my dad and hugged him while yelling Thank You, Thank You! The memory still makes me misty eyed. I also remember him handing me his first electric guitar when I was 14 for me to learn while we were listening to A Farewell to Kings. He showed me the opening riff of Bastille Day and it was the first thing I ever played. Eventually he bought me my first guitar for my 16th birthday and an amp the following Christmas. One of the most meaningful things anyone has ever done for me was when I unwrapped a box that year from my father. Inside were all my dads Rush vinyls framed and ready to be put up on my wall. I have them to this day hanging up in my apartment. I still cant believe he gave them to me. My friend purchased me a couple this year for Christmas to help me complete that collection. I also went to Rush with my friends in 2012 without my dad, but he was there to! Personally, Rush has enormous sentimental value to me. Its not just a band! Geddy, Alex and Neil are the perfect people to look up to. The drumming is impeccable, the bass playing unmatched and the guitar is flawless. Theyre mature, talented and humorous. Every song is either a monumental story or a metaphorical journey. Whats not to love?! My father and Rush are the reasons why I am in a band and play guitar. And these days Im completely obsessed with music. Their entire discography has meaning to me. I am now personally responsible for Rush being all of my friends favorite band as well! Thanks for hearing me out!
