When we first posted this senior Lab, so many of you shared his post in the hopes we could reunite him with his owners. His stray hold was up yesterday and sadly nobody came to take him home. As his stray hold was coming to an end, many of us realized that he was going to be just another of the many lost and unclaimed in our shelter system. Behind the scenes we worked against the clock to change the future of the dog that now has a name...Ben, Gentle Ben. He was given his name by the person who in our eyes is a real Hero. Bens story is bitter sweet, he will be leaving the shelter tomorrow and he will be going home with the person who has stepped up to give him love until the end of his days. Health wise Ben is in a lot worse shape than we originally thought. He has hair loss and looks dreadful, apparently this is down to malnutrition. His mobility is pretty poor, he has degeneration of the spine due to old age. We were at the shelter this morning with staff and the shelter Vet, they agreed he should be given a chance of knowing love for the time he has left. The goal is to give him a good quality of life, make sure he is pain free and for him to recieve lots of love. Thanks to Renée and her family Ben will live out the remainder of his life at their home. Many people may say why rescue a very senior dog who has so many health issues and doesnt have much time left on this earth, but we just could not leave him behind. One look in his eyes and you can see why we fight so hard for every senior cat and dog we come across. We see the desperation in these lost souls and know the love of a human can give them the strength to go on a little longer and cross over Rainbow Bridge having been loved in the latter part of their life. Tomorrow we will post photos of his ride from the shelter to the Vet where he will be meeting the angel that saved him...his new Mom. petcaring/nonprofits/save-a-lab-in-need-/47446
