When we met with Emmas oncologist today, he told us that the lab results from Fridays visit showed the presence of Toxoplasmosis, which is most commonly transmitted via cats. The level that showed in the blood work is low, but something requiring a closer look. When Emma had an eye exam on Tuesday, the ophthalmologist looked closely for any indicators in the eye of an active infection; none were seen. Emma had a second set of labs drawn at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a CT scan, which seemed to indicate that the levels seen in the lab work show only prior exposure to Toxoplasmosis and not an active infection. We are hopeful that there is not an active infection. If there is an active infection, it will be treated with bactrim and could potentially delay her transplant date. Absent any delays or setbacks, Emma is scheduled for surgery at 8:30 a.m. to put in her Broviac line. We will have to arrive at the hospital at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning, so we still stay at the Ronald McDonald House in Boston the night before. Emma will not start chemotherapy until Saturday, which should give her enough time to recover from her surgery. Following three days of chemotherapy, she will have four days of radiation therapy, and then her bone marrow transplant. Tomorrow, Emma will enjoy her final day at home before transplant. She is hoping to see her friend Taylor before going to Boston, and a few other fun activities with Mom and Dad. This is a bittersweet moment for us as parents. We are thrilled that her brother, Alex, is a match and equally thrilled to be going to the top hospital for treating pediatric cancers. We appreciate your continued love, thoughts, prayers, and generous donations to Emmas Journey to Remission. We are hopeful that this is the start of the final leg of that journey.
