When we moved to the east side of North Main Street in Petersburg, - TopicsExpress

When we moved to the east side of North Main Street in Petersburg, WV there was a Grimes golden apple tree growing beside the house. Some of the limbs overhung my bedroom so I became accustomed to the sound of apples hitting the roof, dribbling down, and thudding onto the ground. This would start in late summer and steadily grow louder through September as the apples grew and ripened. When they were small enough, golf ball size, I would use a Wrist Rocket slingshot and splat them against the water tank on the hill or off the sides and roof of the old unoccupied Monarch Mills building. When ripe they were a pretty speckled gold, crisp and juicy with a distinctive spicy aroma. I loved those apples. I was away at school when my father bought a new chainsaw and to try it out cut down that tree. In the fifty years since pap murdered my tree, I have never tasted another Grimes golden apple like those.
