When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so, This statement from Pope Francis in regards to the ability for the theories of evolution and intelligent design to co-exist should strike us in some way. I do not believe the problem is with the attempt to take our knowledge of science and combine it with our understanding of God. That is a good thing. We have science for a reason. My problem is this statement and what it presupposes about Gods nature as a preface to the co-existence of evolution and intelligent design. Whether it was intended or not, this statement is nearly an oxymoron. It places constraints on the creator, which is an absurd assumption to make. If we are going to take a theistic approach to evolution I think it is absurd to come from the starting point of God couldnt. That is my opinion though and there is context to the quote, so take a read and think about it for yourself. It is important to think about this stuff and critically analyze why it is we believe what we believe.
