When we were doing our O’levels(1995) at Kibuli s.s , our political education teacher, Mr.Mugume, taught us that politics means the ‘management of the society and its resources’, but what exactly is Politics? Ive been reading through what other people think and it’s amazing: 1.Politics is the art by which politicians obtain campaign contributions from the rich and votes from the poor on the pretext of protecting each from the other,” wrote Oscar Ameringer (1870-1943) in his autobiography, If You Don’t Weaken (1940). It is not certain when Ameringer first used the quotation, but he was being given credit for it in several publications in 1932. Oscar Am ringer came to be called the Mark Twain of American Socialism. 2. ‘I offered my opponents a deal: if they stop telling lies about me, I will stop telling the truth about them.~Adlai Stevenson, campaign speech, 1952. 3. ‘A politician is a fellow who will lay down your life for his country’ ~Texas Guinan. 19th century American businessman 4. ‘I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians’- Charles de Gaulle, French general politician 5. Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks’ ~Doug Larson (English middle-distance runner who won gold medals at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, 1902-1981). I think those who handed the management of Kampala to statehouse may find this interesting. 6. ‘We hang petty thieves and appoint the bigger thieves to public office’ ~Aesop, Greek slave fable author 7.’Those who are too smart to engage in politics are punished by being governed by those who are dumber’ ~Plato, ancient Greek Philosopher 8. ‘Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river’ ~Nikita Khrushchev, Russian Soviet politician 9.’ When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become PM;I m beginning to believe it’~Quoted in Clarence Darrow for the Defense by Irving Stone. 10.’Politicians are people who, when they see light at the end of the tunnel, go out and buy some more tunnel’~John Quinton, American actor/writer Like they say: ‘What happens if a politician drowns in a river? That is pollution. What happens if all of them drown? That is a solution .....!!! By the way, is Mr.Mugume still at Kibuli Secondary School ? Is the political education club still there or it gone with former H/M, Hajji Abassi Mukasa? I sometimes miss those debates. I would love to participate in one of them next time I’m in Kampala during school days if the club is still there (if they can organise them during the day rather than at night, Kampala is not the safest place at night).
