When you are a student in Delft it is inevitable to hear about “pepernoten” “speculaas” and eventually “oliebollen”. The students of course know this because these are all Dutch treats that are part of special celebrations. Especially for the international students a post about these winter treats! The pepernoten and kruidnoten for example are part of the Sinterklaas celebration. Pepernoten or pepper nuts are spiced with anise, cinnamon and clove. The bite sized cookies are so popular that they are available in the stores as early as September! The speculaas biscuits are available throughout the year and are flavoured with spices of the cold winter season such as cinnamon and nutmeg. Last but not least, the oliebollen. It may not sound delicious, but oliebollen are a Dutch treat traditionally made on New Year’s Eve. They are actually deep fried balls of dough. In Delft you can buy freshly made oliebollen next to the Oude kerk, or you can just buy them in the supermarket and heat them up.
