When you are feeling like you havent measured up, youve over-extended, youve lost your focus, or you just want to experience some Christmas joy, take a few moments to watch Toris video and read Michelles post. This is Christmas! From Michelle The Light Christmas Trees, Peanut Butter Balls, Turkey, Presents, Santa, Baby Jesus in a Manger, Tinsel, Christmas Movies, Snow, Stockings… There are so many things that come to mind when thinking of Christmas. Maybe it’s a family joke like “soap on a rope”, maybe its the smell of the cedar chest that you keep the ornaments in, Maybe it’s leaving milk and cookies out for Santa or going to the Christmas Eve service with the whole family. Strip all that away, (down to every last snowflake) and you have “Christmas” here on Nosy Be. Christmas is not celebrated- they have a break in school- but it is for the New Year. They don’t know of a reason to celebrate. Well last night, for the first time- I, and my team, had the AMAZING privilege to give them one. We gathered with about 300 of our Sakalava friends and neighbours and told them the story of a God who loved them so much, that He sent His son to this messy world to rescue them. Our friends- the band took a translation of “Oh Holy Night” and made an amazing Sakalava version. As we finished telling the story in drama form, and the sun began to set, Rosina- our team leader spoke about the darkness of the world and how Jesus came to be a light. She lit her candle and then- in perfect timing- as night had come, everyone there lit their candles from one another. The band came in and led us in “Oh Holy Night”. My eyes were quickly filling with tears as I looked out and saw hundreds of people singing, and dancing to the words of this song. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn!” A thrill of hope indeed. Jesus has come. From Tori Alverson:
