When you are in high school and you learn the linguistic rules of your own language you never think that once you actually need that knowledge - the definitions - to teach other, non Hungarians. Yesterday I had a long meeting with a young and ambitious conductor who asked my help in Hungarian diction. He will have a Bluebeards Castle semi staged show in December and wanted to get the main idea of my language. My knowledge of multiple languages definitely helped, so I could explain how i.e. gy sounds like the Spanish yo, j&ly sound like the Mexican yo or ty sounds like in the French name Thierry. Then came the rule of consonant conjunction... I recited the whole Bluebeard onto his recording device. And while I was reading it I realized: Bluebeard is a personal matter for me. In that masterpiece Hungarian becomes blood and I am blood of Hungary. You need to be Hungarian to be able to understand that piece. It is not just about a genius music, a great myth. Theres something unspoken magic about that opus. And I feel privileged to be able to feel that magic through the Hungarian roots, the Hungarian language, the Hungarian blood.
