When you follow the pioneer trails through Wyoming and into Utah, you walk in the footsteps of two tragedies, that of the Donner Party and that of the Mormon emigration handcart disaster. In both cases a series of bad decisions by the leaders of the western-bound parties led to the deaths of men, women and children as winter descended upon them. There is a line between risk-taking and arrogance in the face of environmental reality, a thin border between hope and wishful thinking. As oceans rise and bees disappear, how long will we pretend that we are the ones in charge, that we can adjust nature to our liking without consequence? Emily+
