When you have a media monopoly, there is no room left for a fair referendum. And this is what unfair looks like: a choice between Russia and an absurd image of a fascist Crimea. But think: both sides of this image were produced in Russia. A mirror image of the same thing? Wheres the choice? Is a black swastika really a balanced representation of an alternative? Sadly, many Russians have fallen prey to state propaganda in the Crimea. Radio Free Europe reports: Many Crimeans, nearly 60 percent of whom are ethnic Russians, watch Russian state news broadcasts, where they frequently hear of the alleged neo-Nazi threat to the ethnic Russian population of Crimea. Signs, at pro-Russian marches and on the streets, warn of impending doom if the local population chooses to stay within Ukraine.
