When you read Jeremiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”, what comes to your mind; what does the Holy Spirit reveal to you? Most of us run to that verse when we are having problems and things are tough for assurance and there is assurance in His Word. In today’s economy that seems to be getting worse making it harder and harder to make ends meet, to keep up with house payments, utilities payments, car payments, groceries, doctor bills, and all the “necessities” of life not including unexpected emergencies, we need God’s Assurance in His Word. But there are times when hearing “God has a plan” doesn’t really give all that much assurance, when life throws us a curve that “no way could be part of God’s plan.” Imagine the many people who had worked hard all their lives and invested a lot of hard earned money for their retirement only to have someone swindle them out of every penny! Or you seem to be on a fast track for promotion and someone concocts a lie about your work ethic and you wind up going to jail and losing everything! Could that really be part of God’s plan to prosper you? If you study God’s Word, the Bible is full of people like us. Remember Joseph, loved dearly by his father Jacob, je would have never thought his brothers would sell him to the Egyptians or that he would be thrown in jail for a lie by someone’s wife. David was promised to become the next king of Israel. But before that happened he found himself on the run from a half-crazy Saul who wanted to kill him. Jesus’ disciples believed they had finally found the one true Messiah, and then had to watch the Son of God be executed like a common criminal. Do you think there were ever moments when each of them wondered, “Does God really have a plan? The truth is, God really does have a plan. We never know what tomorrow may bring, and we never know how events, even a painful ones, might be used by God to create a brighter future. Life is tough, but that does not mean God doesn’t care. He knows what He’s doing; He’s got a plan.
