When you remember that goods were hauled by horse and wagon over Paradise hill and down Benson creek to the towns. The goods usually came from the steam ships at Brewster or Central Ferry. Some people may have freighted year long, others as they had time between working on the ranch. The trip was longer than a day or two. The freighters would camp out or stay at a lay over station or stage stop. My Mom, Evelyn Stokes told a story about her uncle Bill who had stopped for the night at a ranch coming up Paradise Hill to spend the night. The lady of the ranch had some chickens. When bill fed oats to the horses the chickens came around to help the horses eat the oats. Bill was chasing the chickens away and the woman ask why he was chasing her chickens. bill said hed brought one along to eat and it had got away. When asked which one, he said that one and pointed one out. the woman then helped him catch the chicken. Then he had to kill and cook it. When he got home he was telling the story at the dinner table. They ate with my grandparents, My grandmothers mom was doing the cooking. When she heard the story, she read bill the riot act and made him take the woman a chicken on his way back through.
