When you see something linked on here pertaining to fashion - TopicsExpress

When you see something linked on here pertaining to fashion throughout the 20th century it is undoubtedly about womens fashion. Why? Well, for men fashion took a turn in the 19th century. Breeches and hose gave way to the full trouser, the tail coat to the frock coat and the frills left shirts. Mens fashion had moved to something similar to the modern three piece suit. As the 20th century drew nearer, shirts became collared and the evening jacket took over from the frock coat for most men. Every day clothing became less and less formal. Ties became rarer and denim began to take a greater hold. By the early 20th century it was acceptable to go without a jacket at all, though a man still wouldnt be caught dead without his hat. T-shirts were issued by the U.S Navy as and undergarment, a sleeved vest essentially, to be worn under shirts. By the 1950s it was fashionable to wear just the t-shirt. From there on out mens fashion barely changed. Jeans with a t-shirt or shirt or both has been part of mens informal attire for over a century in some form or another. Ive dressed the same for the best part of thirty years. Sure, the fit of a t-shirt, shirt or pair of jeans has changed slightly over that period, but the essence has always been the same. Women, on the other hand, only really began to have there fashion change in the mid 20th century. There was little variation for centuries before that. Dresses became lighter and more comfortable in the early part of the century, but it has only really been the last seventy years or so that there has been any drastic change and in that time it has changed a lot. Like someone who has spent a lifetime eating only rice cakes then be given access to a huge and varied buffet, womens fashion has gone mad with variety. Some choices were good, others not so good. I dont blame them, I wish mens fashion offered as much variety. Though now, it seems, they have had a taste of everything, but are still hungry and desperately searching for those two things that went really well together, yet cant remember what they were. Grasping at straws, taking parts from one decade and colliding it against parts from others, womens fashion has gotten desperate for new ideas, often leading to hilariously hideous consequences. This is why Im glad to be a man. We found something simple, comfortable and timeless. With a simple tweak we can go from relaxed to almost formal, and we always look good in a suit. I look forward to the days women can do the same. Now, if we could just ban skinny jeans.
