When you tell Americans you have a degree in theology, as I am obliged to do as it is my degree, I have no idea what they imagine such a course of study entails. I imagine they think I studied worthless sentimental nostrums, preaching, and bible stories and am embarrassed for them and for me, seeing their judgment reflected in their eyes. Theology is, in fact, an extremely difficult area of study, requiring an integrated view of dozens of separate academic disciplines. Having a degree in theology in America today is like having a degree in relativistic physics in the middle ages. No one has a clue.
