When your touchdown celebration is the sign of making money, your nickname includes your sport and you generally strike the world as a brash young man who hasnt even been there yet, the masses and the media will relish your failures. I get it. Juan Futbol made a couple of terrible decisions and throws yesterday, that were the type that rookies make when they are used to being faster and more athletic than the majority of the players on defense in college, and then find out, this aint college. While Im no Manziel disciple or even that much of a fan, per se, I find the post debut bashing by the media and most of the folks Ive spoken with, to be a little ignorant and one-sided. That Browns defense was gawdawful yesterday, as were the special teams. #2 didnt blow a single coverage. There were several nifty plays made by the rookie early that could have turned the game around for the Browns offense, but they ended in dropped passes or were called back for stupid penalties. He operates at a different speed than those players are used to. It will take a little time. Trust me when I tell you, John Q Public might not think much of the kid at the moment, but the football people around him saw enough good to give them hope. But sadly, this is just what we do. Build em up, tear em down, put em through the grinder just as fast as we can. America likes their Cinderella stories the way they like their information these days....immediately or not at all. We have such a desperate appetite for celebrities that we can tear down, that we create them out of thin air at an alarming rate. But what do I know.
