When youre young, youre less sure of the way things work because youre learning - for example, how much your labour is worth to your employer, and what your rights to sick pay or holiday pay are. You learn this stuff as you go, as well as how to speak up for yourself. But what if you had to bargain over this stuff before you had a real chance to learn what it means to your working conditions? Family First Senator Bob Day reckons young people should be able to bargain with employers to work for less than the minimum wage and to waive conditions such as sick pay, holiday pay or unfair dismissal protections. While Day is against the six-month wait for the dole proposed for under 30s, he says we shouldnt deny people the option of taking jobs under terms and conditions that suit them.
