Whenever I hear on the news that extremists have attacked and killed people in retaliation of insult or in defense of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and/or Islam, the following story comes to mind: There was a woman who would attack the Prophet whenever he passed by her house by emptying her garbage basket over him. Prophet Muhammad passed by her house daily, as it was in the vicinity of the mosque. The Prophet would not show anger or annoyance, and would carry on. One day the lady was not there to throw her garbage. The Prophet stopped, and asked the neighbor about her well-being, wondering why she wasnt there. The neighbor informed the Prophet that the woman was sick in bed. The Prophet asked permission to visit the woman. When he entered the house, the woman thought that he had come there to take his revenge while she was sick and defenseless. The Prophet asked her if she need anything, and assured her that he wasnt there to harm her, but to make sure she recovered and felt better. The woman was overcome with guilt; despite the ill manner in which she treated him on a regular basis, he still showed kindness and compassion. It is said that the Prophet cared for the woman daily until she was healthy and back on her feet. While Prophet Muhammad lived, he was attacked regularly, physically and verbally. He faced much oppression, but he faced it with grace and compassion. These are the lessons in which he taught us to live by. So if he didnt retaliate in his defense, who or what gives us the right? It truly perplexes me when people fight to defend their God.
