Whenever Im feeling low, I reach for my dog eared 1983 copy of the New Rolling Stone Record Guide amazon/The-Rolling-Stone-Record-Guide/dp/0394721071.Not for their 5 star rhapsodies about The Beatles or Stones or whoever, but for the artists they slag off. Whole albums... years worth of aspiration and toil... sometimes even whole careers... and they dismiss them with one cruel sentence. Its hilarious reading, and never fails to cheer me up. Heres a couple of favourites for today: Robert Byrne - Blame It On The Night. Review: How about blaming it on Robert Byrne? Mary Burns - Mary Burns. Review: What a great voice. What a lousy record. or even this, for an artist who would later inspire epic sycophancy: Kate Bush - The Kick Inside Review: Sort of like the consequences of mating Patti Smith with a Hoover vacuum cleaner. The next time some sub-literate announcer on Triple J is raving about how DJ Lugubrious just dropped his new album, try to imagine it being reviewed 20 years later by these guys. Youll feel better already...
