Where Hall Garth Lane meets Garth End Road the road surface is littered with conkers. Brown and shiny like new shoes, untouched by human hand but crushed by car tyres. Not so very long ago, these trophies would have been gathered by local kids who were keen to be declared the conker King. I once had a tenner! This weekend at Oundle in Northants is the World Conker Championship, but do our kids play conkers nowadays? Word is that the elf and safety lobby have banned them as dangerous. Some schools allow them as long as the players wear goggles. Some ban because youngsters have nut allergies. Ayton School tell me that playing conkers is allowed. Phew! Kids are allowed to be kids.
