Where are the men in loving and caring for their wives and family? In Ephesians 5:25 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her”. It is important for people to know that marriage is not a private arrangement between two people, but marriage is God’s institution. God has the right to instruct those who get into it. It is only in following the divine instruction that we’ll find joy and happiness in marriage. God was saying to man, “If you are a husband”, which means you have entered into the marriage covenant, then “You must love your wife”. It is important to note that this is not a conditional statement. There are no preconditions for loving your wife. There are many who have many excuses for not loving their wives. Some say, she is does not respect me, she does not love my parents; she does know how to cook, etc. That fact is: if she is your wife, you must love her regardless of what she does or does not do. In fact, the word used for love in the text above is ‘agape’, which is the universal unconditional love of God. What Paul is saying to men is: love your wives, not only when the feelings and passions are high, love them with the unconditional love of God. This is the stubborn love of God. The love loves someone who says “I don’t love you and don’t care about you”. It is the love that is not based on what the person has done or achieved. It is the amazing love that loves the unlovable and through its power transforms them into good people. If the man does not follow this instruction, meaning that if he does not love his wife, he is disobeying God, and therefore he will be accountable to Him. MJM Ravhengani
