Where do you start a Painting? One of the most frequently asked questions that I receive when talking to people is, where do you start a painting?, in this case a portrait. I must admit, its a challenge to quantify my process. Everyone has their own methodology, so no two techniques are the same. They have similarities, yes, however how you see the world and how you interpret your vision, well that is totally unique to that individual. Thought I would share some of my initial processs. The sketches might not make sense and have no significance to anyone, other than me, however this is whats in my mind as I begin the journey of painting. Ultimately, I work on re-creating the connection, an emotion, that I had felt of that individual and then it becomes a journey of interpreting that feeling within the paint. Here are the beginning stages of Imogen... Quick NOTE - in the beginning stages of the painting, I block in, what I refer to, cartoon eyes so that, as I develop the painting, I maintain that emotional contact with my sitter.
