Where have all the bees gone? The government announced that they will be launching a review into the dramatic reduction in the number of bees over recent years. A variety of explanations have been posited for the decline in bee numbers: many blame the unusually cold spring, the continuing loss of their natural habitat or use of pesticides. Others suggest infection by parasitic mites or even the disorienting effects of wireless communications. Whatever the cause of the decline, the role played by bees in pollinating crops is enormous; estimates put the value added to the British economy by pollinators at around half a billion pounds. It is hoped the review will bring together the available evidence and help to develop some consensus on the best way to halt this decline. Suggestions being mooted include harsher regulations on the use of pesticides and the allocation of fields to the growing of wildflowers. Have you noticed a decline in honeybees? What can be done?
