Where it all began. The place that put Hayward on the map. The former Haywards Hotel in its heyday. William Hayward was born in 1815 on a Massachussetts farm. As a young man, he worked in a shoe factory. Like so many other men of the era, in 1849 he ventured out west to California in search of gold. He took a steam ship around to San Francisco, and headed for the gold fields. He had little success finding gold but he did find some profit selling shoes to the miners. In 1850 he returned to the Bay Area through the Livermore Valley. He paused near Dublin to harvest the abundant wild grains that grew there. He then moved west and set up his tent in Palomares Canyon, on land owned by Don Guillermo Castro. Annoyed, Castro went to investigate. The story goes, Hayward asked to stay, and made Castro a fine pair of boots. Castro suggested that Hayward move his tent closer to Castro’s adobe where the valley opened onto a level plain. The year was 1851. After the gold rush, Castro’s land was constantly beset by squatters. He likely found that fighting them was difficult. Working with them was easier, and more profitable. Hayward set up a trading post at his tent site. The little town grew and grew. Hayward soon upgraded his business. He purchased the land from Castro and built a wood frame hotel and store at present day A and Main St. Haywards Hotel was a popular waypoint for travelers on both the “El Camino Real” Mission road and the Livermore road. The crossroads was a short distance from the hotel. By 1883, Haywards Hotel had grown to 100 rooms as well as cottages and stables. William Hayward oversaw the business until his death in 1891. His wife Rachael continued to run the business until her death in 1917. The hotel burned down in 1923. The legacy of Haywards Hotel lives on to this day… in the name of the place that is known for its welcoming and diverse spirit. The city at the crossroads… Hayward, California.
