Whether it is the water they use to irrigate large decorative lawns or the paper they use to send customer bills, the DWP needs to do more to lead by example and become the showcase for sustainability that Angelenos deserve. From the Los Angeles Register: The council passed the [contract for virgin paper for DWP bills] 12-1, with 11th District Councilman Mike Bonin opposed. He blasted the utility for using a printer that wouldn’t work with recycled paper, saying it goes against recycled purchasing policies that have been on the city’s books since 1992. “We are about to purchase millions of dollars of paper that is virgin paper. This is about deforestation,” Bonin said. “I think part of the recycled purchasing policy would be making sure if we buy equipment that handles paper, or handles materials, that it can handle recyclable material.”
