Whether or not you are a planner, if you are writing some kind of fantasy, dystopian, sci-fi or anything else set in a different world, you need to build your world! This doesn’t mean you need to work out the plot for your story - you just need to know the setting. What are the laws of this world? How much access to water do they have? What ages are children/youngling creatures schooled? And later when you get to part of the plot where an alteration to the setting needs to be made, then that’s fine. But your world will be much better if you establish it before you start writing. It will also just make everything so much easier. You can continue free writing without having to stop to work out a particular fact. - Gabryelle - Young writers
