Whether they wear a uniform, answer phones when someone calls for help, or are support staff working behind the scene to make sure the wheels of justice keep turning, first responders play an integral part of the safety and well-being of Alaskans. They dedicate their lives and shoulder the burden of protecting those who cannot otherwise protect themselves. This job is not for faint of heart. It’s not one that garners many thanks, but they don’t do it for the accolades or to get rich; they do it because they want to make our neighborhoods, streets, highways and villages safe. In gratitude of members of the Department of Public Safety and other first responders, Governor Parnell signed a proclamation designating tomorrow, Sept. 27, 2014 as First Responder Appreciation Day in Alaska. The proclamation is addressed to the “courageous men and women in Alaska’s career and volunteer police and fire departments, search and rescue personnel, emergency medical responders and military members who are the first to arrive at the scene of an emergency and are the first line of defense against public safety threats.” Please join us in thanking our first responders for the job they do. The Executive Proclamation by Governor Sean Parnell: WHEREAS, first responders put their lives on the line each and every day to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all Alaskans; and WHEREAS, Alaskas career and volunteer policemen, firefighters, emergency medical responders, search and rescue professionals, and military members are well-trained and equipped to handle a wide variety of emergency situations; and WHEREAS, these courageous men and women are the first to arrive and assist at an emergency scene and are the first line of defense against all public safety threats; and WHEREAS, extreme weather conditions and remote and dangerous terrain make first responders critical to the safety of Alaskans, in both urban and rural settings; and WHEREAS, we appreciate the incredible efforts and sacrifices of Alaskas dedicated first responders who are always on guard to serve Alaska, and we are especially grateful to those who have given their lives in service to others, and thank them for continually providing hope and inspiration to Alaskans in need. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the family members of our first responders who sacrifice much so that we can have safe homes and communities. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sean Parnell, Governor of the State of Alaska, do hereby proclaim September 27, 2014 as: First Responder Appreciation Day in Alaska, and encourage all Alaskans to recognize the vital role of Alaskas first responders in keeping our children, families, and communities safe.
