Whew - its been a while! Paperweight - Stephen Fry Stephen Fry is hilarious. This is a collection of a bunch of his radio show transcripts, magazine articles, and other various endeavours. You do the math. (Although to be fair, the poignancy of a lot of his criticism was lost on me since the source material was often based in the Britain of the 80s.) The Circle - Dave Eggers Silicon Valley apocalypse in the making - feels like 1984 with a modern plug and equally as terrifying as Eggers explores the fading boundaries between off-the-grid and omniscience, and what happens when the world becomes transparent through the unity of social media. The Road - Cormac McCarthy An oldie but a goodie. An unnamed father-son duo struggle for survival as they scramble across a burned America in search of any remnant of the world gone by. This was interesting to come to after The Circle with the contrast of the two dystopias: one pervaded in isolation and the other in absolute connectivity. Throw in a few textbooks (Modern Physics, Protein Structure and Function) and were up to date!
