Whew! Glad to wake up from this reoccurring nightmare... I keep dreaming that I am a classroom teacher. Even though I am a person who says, never say never, I can with total determination that will NEVER happen. I love being a tutor even though some people are trying to make tutors teachers and other people are allowing it to happen. For example yesterday I had a formal observation. My lesson was identifying even and odd numbers. The smartest child I had could not do it, even after I gave several examples. So I ask the children to think of a sentence and include an even number as part of the sentence. My example: I have 2 sisters. When I asked the smart child, he shrugged his shoulders and said I dont know. I asked him why dont you know. He said today is my dead sisters birthday. He went on about 10 minutes with tears in his eyes talking about his sister. Of course the coordinator was writing his little heart out. When the child finished, I said thank you for giving me a sentence with an even number, now repeat that sentence. He thought for a moment, and said, Oh yeah, she would have been 8 years old today. After the kids and coordinator left, one of the young people said to me, Ms. Pettis everybody here knows you are an extraordinary teacher, why did you allow that child to go on and on about his sister, as a result you didnt get through all your lesson. I told him, children truly do come first with me. I asked him did you notice how tuned into learning he became, after he told the story about his sister. I retired from the stress of teaching, (getting through a lesson in a certain amount of time), but I dont ever intend to retire from having a heart for children. Therefore, teaching is not my job/career, its my purpose. So I said all of that to simply say this, whatever your purpose in life is, dont allow man to dictate to you how, where, or when it is to be done, always do it in such a way that you know God is pleased.
