Whew, what a weekend. My wife Julie and I worked all weekend at the Plaza Theatre in Keokuk. It was Bald Eagle Days and we had the pleasure to host live bird seminars in our big auditorium during the matinees. More than 2500 persons attended in 3 days and saw a live Eagle up close as well as several very cool birds who flew over the heads of audience members. Best of all...It was Free! We also opened the new movie American Sniper which set all kinds of attendance records across the country. It was a big relief to play this movie flawlessly on our new digital projector and sound system. I was approached on Friday night by a gentleman and his wife who has a son that served on two missions with Chris Kyle including the one featured towards the end of the movie. They vouched for the accuracy of the depictions in the movie. They believe their son is the only Iowan who is an active Navy Seal. I also had one veteran tell me as he was entering the theatre that it will be weird watching something he just got back from. After each showing there was complete silence as patrons left the theatre. It was something I have never witnessed in my 44 years operating theatres. It was so respectful. I think this movie finally let Americans get a glimpse of what has happened over the past 20+ years as we fight these different wars. I really do not want to comment either way on the necessity of these wars. I do want to acknowledge the sacrifice and bravery of the service men and women who volunteered to serve in these conditions and make it possible for us to feel safe at home. They deserve our gratitude.
