Which photo best represents the state of YOUR family photo - TopicsExpress

Which photo best represents the state of YOUR family photo collection? Okay, I guess Ill go first. The first photo is (sheepishly, he admits) mine. It’s the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet in my office. I simply refer to it as a family archive. Less than perfect. Im not proud of this, obviously, as Im a professional photographer who runs a website and courses teaching How to Photograph Your Life. But, like many of you, thats the problem—Ive been hard at work on all of that and spend my free time with my family and just keep procrastinating dealing with all the personal photos we have from the pre-digital days. (Dont worry, I can assure you that my professional photo archives do NOT look like this.) But lets just say Anne and I have some work to do in getting our personal photographic lives in order. The second photo was on our page by Deanne Murray Sanderson, who explains that all her most precious family photos are in these albums (Creative Memories) and says Im currently working on a big trip we took this summer, but everything else is organized and displayed in my albums. Well, Deanne, I applaud you, and youve just given me further inspiration to get to this point—whether digitally or physically. So, new year, new me...This is the year I organize everything! But Ive said that before. And failed miserably. So this time Im calling in reinforcements. First, Cathi Nelson from the Association of Personal Photo Organizers is going to help me get everything digitized and organized. No small task in itself. I cant say Im looking forward to this step, but hey, you have to go through childbirth before you can hold that baby in your arms, right? The next part, finding a way to store and share all my newly decluttered digital files, doesnt scare me as much. This is mainly because my online archiving company of choice—FOREVER—really takes the thinking, and the worry, out of ensuring that my grandchildren and their grandchildren will still be able to delight in what great-great-grandfather Kelsh got up to with his family in 2015. Im actually looking forward to digitizing and uploading my most important photos and adding descriptions and tags to some of the photos of the boys—imagine the kick the grandkids will get out of reading what I thought of their dad Teddy playing in his first baseball game or their dad Alexanders Lego prowess! It is remarkable that in just a few clicks, I could be done uploading all my precious family documents: photos, recipes, legal documents, kids artwork ... and its there for me to share with whomever I choose, for many generations to come. If you’re joining me in my “Get Your Photographic Life in Order” webinar next week—and I hope you are!—you’ll get a little glimpse into what my “family archive” will look like after I’ve amassed, decluttered and uploaded all the keepers, into an organized system of digital albums.
