While David never planned or expected to be king of Israel, God - TopicsExpress

While David never planned or expected to be king of Israel, God elevated David to that position of power and influence because David was humble; he was not embarrassed to ask for the Lord’s input; he was not arrogant or over confident in his own strength. He was not seeking to elevate himself. David understood his own limitations and openly relied on the Lord to supply every need. 1 Kings 11:4 says that David’s heart “was wholly true to the Lord his God.” The Lord knew that David would consult Him before he acted. He knew that David understood that his wisdom and power came from the Lord, and He also knew that David would give all the praise and glory for success to the Father himself. We know that David’s heart was pure before the Lord because after being anointed king, he did not rush into Saul’s palace and roust him from the throne. Instead, he continued to spend time with the Lord and to follow the directions of the Spirit for his daily life. It was years before Saul finally died and David sat upon the throne of Israel. During that time frame, David was pursued by both Saul and the enemies of Israel. He rarely slept in the same place two nights in a row; and when he did sleep he slept with his sword in his hand. David describes these years in detail in both 2 Samuel chapter 22 and Psalms 18. He explains how the shepherd became the warrior when he says, 2 Samuel 22:2-4 "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; thou savest me from violence. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.” Certainly, David had learned to cunningly live in the open and fend for himself as a shepherd boy; but as he explains, his own ability had nothing to do with his success. Because he had delighted himself in the Lord, the Lord was delighted with him. When David called upon the Lord for wisdom and defense, deliverance and the knowledge necessary to evade the enemy was immediate. 2 Samuel 22:17-20 says, "He (the LOrd) reached from on high, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me; for they were too mighty for me. They came upon me in the day of my calamity; but the LORD was my stay. He brought me forth into a broad place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.” These were dire circumstances in David’s life. They were unplanned and unwanted; and yet, as he sought the Lord’s help and direction, he was delivered, elevated in position and blessed. Since the Lord is not a respecter of persons nor does His will or character change, this same deliverance and blessing is available to us today. There is no situation too difficult that the Lord is not able to take us through it victoriously. There is no health issue that is too extreme for the Lord to heal. His power is limitless and to be His friend, to walk in His counsel daily should be our primary goal.
