While I agree with the whole Jezebel critique of how women are portrayed in the media, particularly in the case of the Lena Dunham shoot for Vouge, I also feel like they are missing the point behind what the real alterations are in photography. Its not so much the retouching they should be concerned with. Its way more about the fact that when you add lighting, hair, make up and a designer dress that is all shot by a top tier photographer then you have already warped the ever living hell out of reality. Lighting changes everything no matter what else happens in a photo and something tells me the editors at Jezebel are not taking selfies in a dark closet. Everyone wants to look good all the time in our world now, not just women, but men as well and in 2014 we all have the tools and the know how to do so and its not going to get any better anytime soon. People are self obsessed and the media is a reflection of that as much as it drives the trend.
