While I am best known as a Filmmaker. As some of you may know, I have a lifelong joyful relationship with photography. I own over 300 antique cameras. Not Leicas but eccentric and wonderful pieces, like spy cameras from the Victorian era, and hand cranked silent movie cameras. In an effort to develop my visual instincts, I make impressionistic nature images. Artistic instinctual discoveries - no studios, no re-writes and they sell! I visited Photo LA last weekend an annual exposition. Along with a feast of visuals from galleries around America, I met one fascinating man in a booth marked Luminous-lint. Alan Griffiths, an Englishman living in Halifax Nova Scotia - who has spent the last ten years of his life and his own funds, creating the only data base of Photography. It is amazing - Luminous-lint is like the wickepedia of Photo History. It has over ten thousand annotated cross referenced images. And a zillion detailed and fascinating notes. He is detailed - I mean really detailed. If you have a passion for the medium and want to know all its rivers and branches, his site opens up like a blossoming flower. I tested him warmly - what have you got on Weegee? - A great eccentric ex-news photographer who bent photography on its ear. A labrythnth of cool images and life history unveiled before me. Alan pulled up detailed information on Autochrome the first color magazine printable image system — he showed me dozens and dozens of pictures and the complet history of its development. Abstract water images? - Got it! Julia Margaret Cameron a pioneering, poetic Victorian woman photographer. - Yep here she is. And the cross connecting tributaries of her life. Margeret Bourke-White? - Here too! Etc... This is an ocean of knowledge. Everything researched and verified. An amazing accomplishment and Alan did it at his own expense and currently is giving access for free. But cant last much longer before he has to charge. While aimed at instutions, he really addresses his site to connoisseurs. But i think even the curious can enjoy a click or two, and experience a wonderful exploration of one of mankinds most amazing mediums. No photography - no movies! Luminous-lint
