While I am limiting my political posts to maybe one a day now, I had a discussion with three of my best friends today over lunch, all right-wing fellows. My question had to do with immigration and what limitations, if any, are anticipated. One of my friends, who is a longtime DA here, brought up a point that I had never thought of and would like anyones opinion on. He said he would like to see drivers licenses issued to people illegally here--which shocked me--because if they are here and are going to be staying, it is actually better to go ahead and license them with the hopes that most will also get insurance, because as it stands now, so many insured drivers who get in collisions with uninsured, unlicensed illegals arent covered unless they themselves carry uninsured motorist insurance. If Joe Blow has a $12 an hour job and drives a $3000 clunker, kinda like my old Ranger, and gets in a wreck with an uninsured illegal--or anyone uninsured, for that matter--hes out of luck getting his car repaired except out of his own pocket. Id never thought about that. And before you go off on this, yes, it assumes that newly licensed immigrants will buy insurance.
