While I appreciate the sentiment, I think its backwards. Heres the thing: Currently, its socially ok that you take time off of work to vote. Civic-minded people are going to go vote, no matter what. Anti-voters never will. On-the-fence people will do it just to get out of work for a few hours: Hey, I was voting -- sue me! If this bill passes and election day becomes a national holiday, people will get off of work anyway. The civic-minded will still vote, the anti-voters still wont, but the on-the-fence people will go to the beach, have a BBQ, go shopping, go drinking or do pretty much anything =except= go vote! Hence, while I appreciate the sentiment, I dont think this will have the desired result. This is often try when one tries to pass a law to get people to do what they want. Lawmakers would do well to study gamers and game-theory. Give people achievement unlocked! for voting, if you want to get them out there! :)
