While I did like Thor, it was not my favorite of the films that came out during Marvels first phase, so as a result this one was probably the lowest on my list of superhero films to see in 2013. Surprisingly though, this one is not only better than its predecessor, but probably my favorite comic book film this year as well. I think kids growing up during this most impressive run by Marvel are quite lucky, as these films weave together a great mythology that is on par with the Star Wars films of my childhood. And like those films of my youth, in addition to the awe & wonder they provided, theres a strong sense of fun throughout all of them (which was so sorely lacking in Man of Steel). Its nice to have scenes of humor that come naturally from the characters, rather than feeling forced, like in the Transformers films. Also, the scenes in Asgard are breathtakingly gorgeous, which moves this film away from being just another standard superhero film, and crosses it over into the realms of both space opera & fantasy, which is why bringing Alan Taylor (of Game of Thrones) on to direct this was such a smart choice. And speaking of run of the mill superhero films, I wondered if this time out they were going to bring Thors alternate identity, Donald Blake, into this one, establishing him as another superhero in NY living two lives like everyone else? Thankfully they dont, which is good as I think by keeping Thor as an immortal figure in these films, rather than just another superhero in disguise, they have manged to surpass the source material in the original comic. This Thor feels much more interesting and is certainly more epic in scope, with such a great supporting cast of characters (Tom Hiddleston again steals the show). There are a few minor things I could quibble about, but the overall film is just too much fun that for me to nitpick about certain flaws greatly misses the point.
