While I do not believe Sam Rubin or KTLA meant any disrespect, they made a small error in the 7am hour that deserves a correction and an apology. During a segment about the Academy Awards, they cut to a shot of WHIPLASH director Damien Chazelle and his wife”. However the woman in the shot is not Damien’s wife. She is Helen Estabrook, the producer of WHIPLASH. Assumptions like these – a woman standing next to a director MUST be his wife – are rampant and they are dangerous. And they chip away at the incredible accomplishments women in this industry have made. Because as of last week, Helen Estabrook is an Oscar nominated producer. And that deserves to be celebrated. I ask you, KTLA, had a man been seated next to Damien, what assumption would you have made?
