While I dont agree with everything opined here. It is a unique perspective most white people dont understand. My disagreement basically revolves around that white people dont understand or feel helpless when their children are away from them. Thats just a difference in viewpoint (perspective) as the author cannot look through my lens, but I cant look through her lens either without such a reflective article. As a parent, I can definitely relate to author and I feel her perspective should give us all reflection. I am away from my child and my wife more than most are and I understand that helplessness she feels. The author is in fact correct about young black men walking in a mostly white neighborhood are feared and targeted for no reason at all. The problem most white people dont understand is black on white crime isnt really a big problem as years of segregation and Jim Crowe have created a mentality of what the author alludes to. I lived in a mostly black and hispanic neighborhood of Chicago or which I was only 1 of 3 white people I saw. I walked a 1/2 mile home from the L sometimes at 2-3 in the morning in one of highest crime rate areas of Chicago and I was never bothered, assaulted, or even harassed. I lived in New Orleans and played basketball everyday for 1-2 hours per day with mostly black people and I was never bothered. No, its not that I earned street cred. We are just repeating the mistakes of the past and killing our society while we are doing it.
