While I enjoyed Obamas impromptu smack talk after some (presumably GOP) toolbags applauded his having run his final campaign, in my opinion the four most interesting moments/considerations of the evening all come back to the SCOTUS: - I did my best to read the tea leaves when Obama said Ive seen something like gay marriage go from a wedge issue used to drive us apart to a story of freedom across our country, a civil right now legal in states that seven in ten Americans call home. Those Justices need to take those poker faces to Vegas. Do not assume that a Federal recognition of marriage equality is a done-deal, friends, just because the robed ones are taking up the issue this session... - You know... It is really crappy to be a Supreme Court Justice and not show for the SOTU. Really crappy. Especially when Ginsberg is there, showing you how to get it done. Which brings me to: - Ginsberg. Oh my oh my. What do the next two years hold? Does she think Obama could get someone confirmed worthly of her replacement? Is she playing the 2016 odds? Is she feeling stunningly virile? What is going to happen? - I was not at all surprised by the anemic response to (and I am paraphrasing from memory here) We can all agree that a woman deserves access to the healthcare that she needs. No, I dont know that we all agree, Mr. President. You and I probably agree, but expecting that room that saddle up to that applause line was like taking a vegan to McDonalds and saying, Were both down with the McAngus, right? Folks in this country cannot even agree as to what kind of healthcare an individual woman may need. Folks cannot even agree that people need healthcare! Oh, and one last thing: - It takes a big ol sack of nuts and a hole where your soul should be to not applaud equal pay for equal work. After that pathetic display, I expect the GOP to rally behind Hillary in 2016 just so they can dock 30% of her constitutionally mandated salary.
